Finding the right light to illuminate a giant loom seems to require an early start when there’s nobody about…
However next Wednesday this latest piece of equipment, will be shared with the gathered folk for the first time at the Illuminate Norfolk event to celebrate 20 years of Norfolk Community Foundation next Wednesday. It’s fair to say that next week it will be illuminated in a whole different way… or should that be i-loom-inated.

The idea for building a giant loom came on a visit to Oxford where we saw a very slick looking giant loom in a public space. It was so inviting. In fact we fell in love with it though we knew we wanted our version to have more of a Wastesmiths vibe. Being invited to Illuminate gave us the impetus to finally build it, and when we found the old doors that form the end panels, the vision was complete.
Huge thanks to the Thursday Make, Grow + Mend crew for cutting down lots of conduit offcuts last week to make the pegs. Make, Grow + Mend flourishes thanks to the support of Norfolk Community Foundation and is a shining example of their work helping Norfolk communities grow stronger together.
We can’t want to invite attendees of Illuminate Norfolk next week to start the first t-shirt yarn woven textile that this loom will facilitate the collective making of. Together we are stronger and together we can make beautiful things out of Norfolk’s discarded materials.
If you’re attending Illuminate Norfolk we look forward to seeing you there, if not then there’ll be plenty of opportunities over the summer to meet our new loom ♻️💚🌍
