It’s International Women’s Day, folks. It’s no exaggeration to say Wastesmiths CIC and our WeWearTheTrousers collective would not exist if it wasn’t for the vision, hard work, generosity, knowledge and skills of the women in our organisation and our community!

Running an organisation can be a big scary thing sometimes, especially when facets of the bombastic business world don’t feel like they represent us at all. A resource like ‘Proposals for the Feminine Economy’ from Sister.is was a revelation when we found it; finding that booklet was like finding an ally.

If anyone hasn’t seen this beautifully considered booklet and would like a read then let us know. Amongst the pages are 12 principles for prototyping a feminist business, and we love every single one of them. The twelfth principle proposes that “a business can be a model for a new social & economic order”.

At every opportunity, we’re guiding Wastesmiths towards what a feminist-shaped organisation might look like. It’s a work in progress and we’re learning at every step. If a business genuinely can be a model for a new social & economic order then we’re conscious that every step we take in shaping Wastesmiths is also a tiny step towards shaping the world we want to see.

Above all we’re desperate to inspire others to organise, set something up and start shaping their own world. We found principle seven of the 12 principles for prototyping a feminist business helps a little, “consider everything an experiment”.

Contrary to the gender balance of the UK’s 50 largest private companies, you don’t need men to set up an organisation, you just need a mission!
